About the Group
A warm welcome to the Cobtree Scottish Country Dancing Group.
If you are looking for Scottish Country Dancing in Maidstone you have come to the right place.
If you came across our website by chance, you may just have stumbled upon the new hobby that you were looking for.
Scottish Country Dancing offers a great social life, combined with both physical and mental exercise
as well as being great fun and very affordable. We are a social dancing group. We try to have a happy evening dancing and socialising.
Improving our knowledge of dancing technique and dances adds to the enjoyment.
Our fees are explained on the Members' Information page.
We are a friendly informal group with a membership of around 40, many of whom also belong to other Scottish country dance groups in the Kent area.
This group was originally formed in 1973 to provide an enjoyable activity for its members and help raise funds for Maidstone Mencap and
particularly for the benefit of the children’s playschool in Cobtree Hall, Mote Park, Maidstone.
Our aim is still to enjoy ourselves and donate our spare funds to this well deserving charity.
A more detailed history of the group can be found on the History page.
We meet every Wednesday evening most weeks between 7.45 and 10.00pm but when we have workshop sessions to help everyone hone their technique we start at 7.30.
All meetings are at the Grove Green Community Hall.
We usually pause for drinks and social chat around 8.45.
The dancing programme is mainly well known dances with some less well known and sometimes challenging dances.
All the dances will be recapped or walked through by the MC.
We have a group of MCs who choose the dances on their programme and guide us through the dances. The weekly programme often includes dances that will be on the programme at dances in the Kent area.
The Cobtree SCDG has been a member of KASS (Kent Association of Scottish Societies) since 1980.
We normally arrange dances each year in February and June and a Christmas party for members and invited guests.
Finally sad news
John Day and Dick Barford, two Men who have contributed an enormous amount to the success of the club over more than 40 years have died recently.
Their contributions to Cobtree, the wider dancing community and to Maidstone Mencap have been recorded by three of our members
in a special edition of the KASS Newsletter which you can read by using this link.

From the formation of the group we have supported Maidstone Mencap.
